The Golden Apples of Idunn: The Norse Myth of Eternal Youth and Divine Longevity

The crisis began with Loki, the famous trickster god of Norse mythology.

Although Loki was connected to the gods of Asgard, he was known for his cleverness, deception, and unpredictable nature.

During one of his journeys, Loki encountered a powerful giant named Thjazi (Þjazi), who desired the magical apples of Idunn.

The giant forced Loki to help him obtain the precious source of the gods’ youth.

Loki agreed.

Later, he deceived Idunn by telling her that he had discovered fruits even more remarkable than her golden apples and encouraged her to leave Asgard carrying her treasures.

When Idunn entered the outside world, Thjazi transformed into a giant eagle and captured her, taking her away along with the golden apples.

After Idunn disappeared, the gods of Asgard quickly began to experience the effects of aging.

The powerful beings who had once seemed beyond human limitations began losing their vitality.

They became:

Weaker;

Older in appearance;

Less powerful than before.

The gods finally understood the true value of Idunn’s role.

Their strength and youth were not guaranteed forever.

They depended on the continuous renewal provided by the golden apples.

Without Idunn, even the gods could not escape the passage of time.

When the gods discovered that Loki was responsible for Idunn’s disappearance, they demanded that he correct his mistake.

To complete his mission, Loki borrowed a magical cloak of transformation from the goddess Freyja, allowing him to take the form of a bird.

He traveled to the giant’s realm and found Idunn imprisoned there.

Using his intelligence, Loki transformed Idunn into a small object that could be carried safely and escaped with her back toward Asgard.

However, Thjazi discovered the escape and pursued them in the form of a giant eagle.

As Loki approached Asgard with Idunn, the gods prepared a defense.

They created a great fire behind him.

When Thjazi, still transformed into an eagle, flew toward the city, he passed through the flames and was destroyed.

Idunn was safely returned to Asgard.

Once again, she offered the golden apples to the gods.

After consuming them, the gods regained their youth, strength, and vitality.

The balance of the divine world was restored.
